ゆうめいな日本人の映画（えいが）監督（かんとく director)といえば... だれでしょうか？

４／１０（土曜日）の２時にDPACで黒澤明（くろさわあきら）の「七人の侍（さむらい）」がありますよ。ながい映画ですけど、時間がある人は見に行ったらいいとおもいます。。黒澤明は今から100年まえの1910年にうまれて(be born)、この映画は1954年に作られました。

今日はグッドフライデーですけど、とてもあたたかいですね。休みはどうですか？

みなさんはファイナルプロジェクトでポッドキャストを作っていますが、つたえたいメッセージについていろいろかんがえていますね。先週はクラスでピアエディティングもしました。だれかとコミュニケーションする時には、聞く人や読む人の意見を知るのは、とても大事だとおもいます。

私は、春休みにいろいろ楽しいことをしたんですけど、シカゴに上原ひろみさんのジャズを聞きに行ったのがとてもよかったです。上原さんはとても有名な日本人のジャズピアニストで、私が大好きなアーティストの一人です。私は前から彼女のファンでしたが、はじめてライブで聞くことができたので、とてもうれしかったです。上原さんは、６さいからピアノの勉強をはじめました。日本の大学に行ってから、ボストンのBerklee College of Musicを首席で卒業したそうです。有名なチック・コリアやオスカー・ピーターソンの影響をうけているみたいです。上原さんはほんとうにピアノが大好きなんです。パフォーマンスを聞くと、そのメッセージがよく分かりますよ。

私はシカゴのJazz Showcaseというジャズクラブで上原さんのジャズを聞きました。友達といっしょにパフォーマンスの１時間前にクラブに着いたので、一番前の席にすわりました！　だからすごくステージに近かったんです。ピアノのソロでしたが、ほんとうにすごかったです。上原さんは世界中でツアーをするので、いろいろな国に行って、そこで新しいジャズの曲を作るそうです。たとえば、この曲は「シュー・ア・ラ・クレーム (Choux à la crème)」という名前です。フランス語ですが、意味は 'Cream Puff' です。日本語では「シュークリーム」と言うんですが、日本でもよくみんなケーキ屋さんで買って食べます。上原さんはパリに旅行した時に、とてもおいしいシュークリームを食べて、それでこの曲を作りました。メッセージは「シュークリームはおいしい！」そして「おいしいけど、ぜんぶ食べたから、もうないんです。だから、とてもかなしい...。」です。

みなさんも上原さんのジャズを聞いて下さい。おもしろいテクニックもつかいますよ。

さくらのこと

春休みがおわって、サウスベンドもずいぶんあたたかくなりましたね。そして、今週はイースター。もう春が来たかな。どう思いますか？
　
私がはじめてアメリカに来たのは1991年ですから、もう20年ぐらいアメリカにすんでいます。でも、私はたいてい1年に2度ぐらい日本に帰るので、おいしい日本料理を食べたり、友だちに会ったり、家でゆっくりしたりします。いろいろな店に行ってふくを買ったり、おさけを飲みに行ったり、電車で旅行に行ったりもします。私はアメリカの生活が好きですけど、日本人だから日本も大好きなんです。

日本に帰るのはたいてい５月と冬休みなんですけど、ざんねんですが、その時には、私が一番見たいものが日本にありません。「一番見たいもの」って何だと思いますか？　---　それは「さくら」です。日本人にとって、さくらはとくべつな花なんです。さくらは、たいてい３月のおわりから４月にさきますが、この時、アメリカの大学には休みがありませんから、日本に帰れません。さくらの花がさいているのは１週間ぐらいでとてもみじかいんです。雨がふったりつよい風がふいたりする時には、すぐにだめになります。だから、きれいなさくらを見るのは、ちょっとむずかしいんです。

日本人はさくらが大好きですから、友だちや会社の人とよく「お花見」をします。お花見は、さくらの木の下で食べものを食べたりおさけを飲んだりするパーティーのことです。カラオケをするグループもあって、とてもにぎやかですよ。

私の誕生日は４月のはじめなんですが、母によると、私が東京の病院で生まれた時、病院のにわはさくらの花が満開だったそうです。さいきん、温暖化でせかいはあたたかくなっているから、東京のさくらはちょうど今とてもきれいだそうです。さくら予報のウェブサイトもあるんですよ。

そして、これは森山直太朗（もりやま・なおたろう）という歌手の「さくら」といううたです。とてもいいうただと思いますから、聞いて下さい。

ところで、みなさんは、ノートルダムのキャンパスにもさくらの木があるのを、しっていますか？　とても小さい木ですが、４本ぐらい、キャンパスの北にあるSt. Josephのみずうみのちかくにあるんですよ。私は2年まえにこのしゃしんをとりました。しゃしんをとったのは４月２３日でしたから、今年もその時に満開かもしれません。天気がいい日にみんなで見に行きませんか？

今日の天気はどうですか？　今週、サウスベンドはずいぶんあたたかくなるみたいですね。

だい１１課（か）の文法（ぶんぽう）はたいへんだけど、今週はイースターの休みがあるので、もうちょっとがんばりましょう。今日のアクティビティーです。

ひなまつり---3/3

３月３日は、ひなまつりです。ひなまつりって何でしょうか？　しっていますか？

ひなまつりは女の子のまつり(festival)で、この日、女の子どもがいる家では　ひな人形（にんぎょうdoll)を　かざって(to decorate)、おいわい(celebration)をします。このまつりは、平安時代（へいあんじだい period ）に　はじまりましたから、１０００年ぐらいのとてもながいれきしがあるんですよ。

ひなまつりの日に、よくちらしずしやおかしを食べて、子供はパーティーをします。もも(peach)のはなはまつりのシンボルなので、いっしょにかざります。

カラオケをしました

2/12の月曜日の晩、CSLC でカラオケパーティーがありました。学生や日本人の人がぜんぶで四十人ぐらい来たとおもいます。ちょっとインターネットのトラブルがありましたけど、だいじょうぶでした。一年生の学生もたくさんうたをうたいました。みんないろいろな日本のうたをしっているから、私はびっくりしましたよ(be surprised)。「リンダリンダ」のパフォーマンスのビデオがあるんですけど、ポストしましょうか？？

テーブルの上にはたくさんすしやおかしがあったんですが...みんながぜんぶ食べてしまいました！

東京（とうきょう）の雪（ゆき）

サウスベンドのふゆはいつもさむいんですけど、今年（ことし）はあまりゆきがありませんね。みなさんはゆきが好きですか？

私は子どもの時、ゆきが大好きでした。とうきょうにすんでいましたが、ゆきはとてもめずらしかったんです。だから、ゆきの日はそとであそぶのがとてもたのしかったんです。友だちといっしょにゆきがっせんをしたり、ゆきだるまをつくったりしました。大学生の時には、よくでんしゃやバスで山にスキーをしにいきましたが、今はあまりいきません。

きのう、とうきょうでゆきがふったそうです。ゆきはすこしでしたが、とうきょうの人はちょっとパニックしたみたいですよ。ゆきの日にドライブするのはちょっとむずかしいですからね。

来（らい）週の日本語のじゅぎょうでユニットテストがありますよ。だから、新しいポストをかいて、ブログにポストした方がいいとおもいます。いいふくしゅうになりますよ。コメントのへんじも書いて下さい。ではいい週末を！

ダイアログのしゅくだい

みなさん、３週目もおわりましたね。週末によてい(plan)がありますか？　何がしたいですか？私は友達のうちにいって、いっしょにばんごはんをつくります。さむい(cold)ので、だんろ(fireplace)のまえでゆっくりして、好きなえいがのDVDをみたいです。土曜日なので、おいしいワインものみたいですね...。

このあいだのみんなのスピーチをきくのは、たのしかったです。peer evaluationとself evaluationもよかったです。今週末はパートナーとダイアログをつくって下さい。だい８かまでのいろいろなぶんぽう(grammar)をいれた方がいいです。

会話（かいわ）テーブル

みなさん、新しい学期（がっき=semester)が　はじまりましたね。ふゆ休みはどうでしたか？

私は日本に３週間かえりました。りょうしんのうちは、横浜（よこはま）にあります。おいしいものをたべて、たくさんかいものをしましたよ。きょうとにもいって、友だちにあって、おさけをのみました。日本では、１月１日は「お正月（しょうがつ）」といって、とくべつ(special)なりょうりをたべます。毎年私のはは(mother)は「おせちりょうり」をつくります。しゃしんを見て下さい。きれいでしょう？

サンクスギビングのしゅくだい

みなさん、週末はどうでしたか？　私は学会（がっかい）がありましたから、木曜日から日曜日までLAとサンディエゴにいました。学会ではセッションにいって、ともだちにあって、いろいろはなしました。そして、たくさんおいしいものをたべましたよ。これはすしのしゃしんです。ちょっとたかかったけど、すごく、すごくおいしかったですよ！！サンディエゴはとてもたのしいまちだとおもいます。

今週はサンクスギビングですね。水曜日からじゅぎょうはありませんが、日本語のしゅくだいはありますよ。

シカゴにいきました

先週の土曜日、日本人のともだちといっしょにくるまでシカゴのアーリントンハイツ(Arlington Heights)にいきました。サウスベンドからアーリントンハイツまで２じかんぐらいかかります。そこには日本のものがたくさんありますから、私はよくいきます。

はじめに、Whole Foodsというオーガニックのスーパーにいきました。私はこのみせ(store)が大すきですが、サウスベンドにはありません。とてもざんねんです。そのあとで、IKEAにいきました。このみせを　しっていますか？　とても大きいスウェーデンのかぐ(furniture)のみせで、日本でもゆうめいです。かわいいものがたくさんあるから、たのしいですよ。私たちは、IKEAのカフェテリアでひるごはんをたべました。スウェーデンのミートボールをたべて、コーヒーをのみました。

そして、ミツワのスーパーにいきました。ミツワの中には、フードコートや日本の本やもあります。私とともだちは、本やでざっしをよんで、スーパーでさかなとやさいをかいました(to buy)。私はアメリカのパンがあまりすきじゃありませんから、パンやでかいものをしました。日本のパンは、しろくてふわふわです。アメリカのとぜんぜんちがいます（to be different)。

それから、わたしは日本のびよういん　　　(「びょういん」じゃありません、「びよういん(hair salon)」です）にいって、ヘアカットをしました。そこは、ちょっとたかいですけど、とてもじょうずです。わたしは、そこですごくたかい日本のシャンプーもかいました。

そして、Woodfieldモールにもいきました。このモールはとても大きくてりっぱで、みせがたくさんあります。モールの中にたくさん人がいました。ごご４じごろから２じかんぐらいモールにいました。

それから、ミツワのちかくの日本のいざかや(bar)にいきました。そこで、ほかの(other)日本人のともだちといっしょに５人でばんごはんをたべて、日本のおさけをのみました。日本のいざかやには、おいしいたべものがたくさんあります。そこに４じかんぐらいいましたから、サウスベンドにごぜん２じごろかえりました。今、シカゴとサウスベンドには、じさ(time difference)が１じかんあります。ちょっとつかれました(to be tired)けど、とてもいい土曜日でした。

Sometimes Notre Dame gets the reputation of not being diverse enough, but this is not really the case, especially when students take advantage of cultural events like Asian Allure. The Asian American Association is putting on a show with singing as well as many traditional and modern dances. It is a great opportunity to learn about different cultures in an exciting way. Everyone is sure to be entertained with the many musical numbers. Tickets are $7 at Lafortune Box Office or $10 at the door. The show will also run Saturday night.

このひとの　なまえは、ベッツィーさんです。ベッツィーさんは、ノートルダムだいがくのCSLCで　しごと(job) を　しています。たいてい　ごぜん　CSLCに　いますが、ときどき　ごごも　いますよ。ベッツィーさんは　にほんで　　　えいごを　おしえました(to teach)。　これは　ベッツィーさんの　にほんの　けいけん(experience)のエッセイです。よんでください。

Hana-sensee asked me to share my experiences living and working in Japan, so I have written the very short account below. I focused on the points that I think might be most useful to you if you want to live and work there, too. However, I would be happy to share more about my experience, including the details of my work, accommodations, social life, and Japanese language development, especially if you have specific questions.

I started studying Japanese when I was a junior in college, and I enjoyed it right away. I was only about a month into Japanese 101 when I decided to apply for a summer internship through JETRO, the Japan External Trade Organization. (Unfortunately,this program seems to have been discontinued.)

I loved my three months in Japan, so I decided to go back and work in Japan after I graduated. I applied for the JET Program, but did not get in. I know many people who did participate in this program, however, and I would highly recommend applying if you are interested. I also applied and was accepted for Princeton in Asia, which sends interns to countries throughout Asia (and is open to graduates from all schools, not only Princeton).

As an intern, I worked in a pharmaceutical company in the heart of Tokyo. My job was to teach English to the employees and proofread documents that they wrote in English. After a year there, I found another job, advertised in the Japan Times, at a company called Kurdyla and Associates. I did the same sort of work for this company - teaching English and rewriting documents.

My husband also lived and worked in Japan with me. However, he came about a year after I did, and to get a working visa, he applied to Aeon and Nova, which are both eikaiwa, or English language schools. He ended up working for Nova, which is no longer in business, for only a few months before joining me at Kurdyla and Associates. These eikaiwa are not great places to work long term because the hours are odd and the pay is not great. However, they will give you a working visa and a living wage, and they will help you find housing, so they may be a good option if living in Japan is your main goal.

Let’s start the Blog Project. For this class we would like you to keep a blog because it provides a place:  

1. To share/express your happiness, surprise, excitement, and/or frustration, as well as any questions you might have, while learning the Japanese language (or any other topics).

While studying new grammar and words is very important when learning a language, it is equally important to actually use the language in a real life context. You must not wait to express yourself only when you think you have mastered the language because language learning is basically an ongoing process. In the beginning you may use English or any languages to express yourself, but I recommend that you gradually switch to Japanese whenever you feel comfortable enough to express yourself in Japanese.

2. To communicate with your classmates and other people outside of class.

Language learning is not limited to what you do for the course but also includes what you do and experience outside the class. We will create links to your classmates' blogs as well as blogs by students in other schools, so you can see what other people think and feel about Japanese language learning (as well as other topics). You are also strongly encouraged to leave comments on these blogs.

We know that your Japanese language is very limited, but you can convey your intended meaning more effectively by utilizing other resources such as pictures and videos. Remember that people utilize not only language but also other resources such as tone of your voice, music, body language, picture, color, font style and size for communication.

3. To reflect (or evaluate) what you have done so far.

Sometimes it is challenging to see our own progress or growth. Blogs help you to look back and see how you have changed through the course of your Japanese language learning.

At the end of the semester your blog will be evaluated by the instructor, your classmates, other people, as well as yourself. We will discuss the criteria of evaluation later.
